Hiccups

About

Hiccups are involuntary, repetitive contractions of the diaphragm muscle followed by sudden closure of the vocal cords.

Causes
• Overeating, Eating or drinking too quickly, Smoking.
• Drinking carbonated beverages, Sudden changes in temperature.
• Excitement or stress, Gastroesophageal reflux (GERD).
• Swallowing air while eating, Alcohol consumption.

Symptoms
• Sudden, involuntary contractions of the diaphragm.
• Repetitive "hic" sound.
• May be accompanied by a slight jolt or spasm in the chest or abdomen.

REMEDY 1
Sugar Method.
This remedy may work by stimulating the vagus nerve and interrupting the hiccup reflex.

Ingredients
• 1 teaspoon of granulated sugar.

Instructions
• Take a teaspoon of granulated sugar.
• Swallow the sugar dry without chewing it.
• Wait for a few minutes to see if the hiccups subside.

Guidelines
• Be cautious with sugar if you have diabetes or other health conditions that require you to monitor your sugar intake.

REMEDY 2
Paper Towel Method.
This method may work by altering your breathing pattern and stimulating the diaphragm.

Ingredients
• A glass of cold water, A thin paper towel or napkin.

Instructions
• Take a glass of cold water., Place a thin paper towel or napkin over the top of the glass.
• Sip the cold water through the paper towel or napkin slowly.

Guidelines
• Be careful not to drink too quickly, as this can exacerbate hiccups.
